SAFTA-winning actress Shoki Mokgapa dies at 34

Our TV screens have lost another life dear reader... SAFTA-winning actress Shoki Mokgapa has died.

There isn't clarity on the cause of her death but the news has been confirmed by her agent Moonyeenn Lee who posted this on the agency's Facebook Page:

It's clear that her death was a sudden shock to her family because her friend Tlangi Mahange posted this this morning:

Shoki was both a TV and film actress who made her TV debut in 2008, as Tumi in the SABC3 drama series The Lab.

She won her SAFTA for her role as Rachel in the feature film Sink, clinching the Golden Horn for Best Lead Actress in 2017.

She joined e.tv's Ashes to Ashes for Season 2 where she played Disebo, a character who fled an arranged marriage, and she was most recently seen on SABC3's crime drama The Docket.

An update... Shoki's agency MLA has released this statement:

The South African film and television industry has suffered a loss in the passing local actress, Shoki Mokgapa. After a long struggle with clinical depression and anxiety she took her life on Tuesday 25 September at the age of 34. She was a brave woman who had been seeking help but the disease proved to be stronger than her.

Known for her work in ‘The Lab’, ‘Intersexions’ and ‘Swartwater’, Mokgapa stole the hearts of audiences in the role of Rachel in the Afrikaans language film ‘Sink’, a role that earned her a SAFTA award in 2017 for Best Actress in a Feature Film.

Her family and friends are currently together, going through the process of mourning and burial. They celebrate their daughter and appreciate all the love that her fans and peers have extended to them. The date and time of her funeral is yet to be decided. The memorial is under planning for Tuesday the 2nd October 2018.

Shoki's Memorial details have been confirmed... it's taking place at The Market Photo Workshop in Newtown, Joziburg from 15h00 until 17h00 tomorrow (2 October).
